There’s a reason pasta has always been a go-to fuel for athletes: It’s low in fat and delivers quick energy in the form of easy-to-digest carbohydrates. The production of energy from carbs is also affected by the type of carbs you’re taking in. You can control the rate at which your energy supply flows by eating certain types of carbohydrate.
Energy-containing foods are now classed by their position on the glycaemic index (GI). This is a rating of food types that gives each one a score according to its effect on the body’s glucose levels as it’s digested over a two-hour time span. The carbs that are rapidly digested so that their glucose is quickly fed into the blood stream have the highest glycaemic index (high GI foods score over 70).
Pasta is a high-GI option when it comes to carbohydrate, so the next question, as its National Pasta Day, whole grain or refined?
Whole grains are rich in fibre, protein, and other nutrients (including B vitamins and iron) that reduce the risks of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
But refined pasta still has a place in the cyclist’s diet. It’s a better choice pre-ride, says D. Enette Larson-Meyer, PhD, RD, CSSD, director of nutrition and exercise at the University of Wyoming. Too much fibre before exercise can upset your stomach, she says. As for whole-grain pastas? They’re best for refilling your tank post ride and repairing sore muscles.
We asked our pasta expert what he would recommend. Dani would recommend Amatriciana, it’s full of proteins so really good to aid recovery after a long ride!

Now we have our 2017 samples, its testing time. What a great excuse to spend the last days of summer cycling round the city. Don’t let traffic put you off, so cities have canal paths and cycle routes that avoid heavy traffic.
The Regents canal path has been a regular route for the new Dandy Premium. Hackney Wick to Angel without breaking a sweat, that’s mainly thanks to the hub gears and a number of really good coffee stops, why wouldn’t you stop to enjoy the view?
A challenge we’ve had with the FOFFA Black is finding enough hills to test the NuVinci hub gears,
Avid BB7 disc brakes and Gates belt drive. We’ve been regulars at Harrow Weald Common, Hampstead Heath (North End) and Shooter’s Hill in Greenwich. When hills are this much fun you can’t help but be excited!
The new FOFFA accessories have meant we’ve been able to fit trays and racks to all but our fixies. No longer are we all arriving with sticky backs and over filled ruck sacks.

Family Health & Fitness Day is a national health and fitness event for families always held the last Saturday in September. This year’s event falls on Saturday, September 24, 2016.
The day’s purpose is obvious, health and fitness. Cycling is great for all the family as it’s a low impact activity. This means it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise.
Unlike so many other fitness activities learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage for every kid and once you learn, you don’t forget.
It’s fun! The adventure and buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors, require special times or places.
Cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness. It’s an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.

Greenpeace was founded on September 15, 1971, when 17 activists set sail on the Phyllis Cormack in hopes of stopping the nuclear testing about to take place off the shores of Alaska. While the testing proceeded, the protest set in motion a movement still growing today. In honour of Greenpeace, Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Robertson proclaimed Greenpeace Day in 2011
#GreenpeaceDay a worthy day we wanted to recognise. The Greenpeace website lists their key principles as
- protect biodiversity in all its forms
- prevent pollution and abuse of the earth’s ocean, land, air and fresh water
- end all nuclear threats
- promote peace, global disarmament and non-violence
We know it’s a romantic idea but it’s one of the reasons FOFFA was born. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone had access to a simple, good quality bike? Then they wouldn’t have to drive or ride the bus or tube……less traffic on our roads more people getting more out of cycling, wouldn’t that be wonderful?
So we’re embracing today and hope you will stand with us to promote peace and prevent pollution. Leave the car behind today; take some time to research a good safe route and ride to work or the shops or to meet friends. Get on your FOFFA!
